Kremena
Kremena Dilcheva was born in the town of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. She comes from a family in which music was adored for centuries — her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother lived with a passion for music throughout their lives. Kremena Dilcheva first displayed her musical talents at the age of 5 when she began playing the piano. Later, from 1985-1993, she excelled as a student at the Christina Morphova Musical School in Stara Zagora, where her talent in piano won her numerous competition awards in Bulgaria and led to performances in recitals and concerts across the country. During this same period, she was also a highly successful ballet dancer, competing in ballet competitions in Bulgaria and abroad for over 10 years. Singing has been her passion since her earliest years.
Kremena began her higher education at the Musical Academy in Sofia, specializing in opera, and became a student of former Berliner Staatsoper Kammersängerin Julia Wiener. She graduated with honors from the Musical Academy in 1998. During this time, she was invited by the Sofia National Philharmonic for various performances, as well as by the Sofia National Opera to perform as Sesto in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, co-produced by the Theatre of Ludwigshafen, Germany. That same year, her first CD, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder, was published by Mega Music, Bulgaria.
Kremena’s international career began immediately after her graduation. In early 1999, she was invited by the Teatro per i cantanti lirici alla Scala di Milano to participate in Giulio Sabino, an opera by G. Sarti seldom performed. This production, staged at the Opera Theatre of Fermo and at the Ravenna Festival in Italy, was a great success and later recorded on CD. That same year, she performed as Annio in La clemenza di Tito in Ulm, Germany. Her performance was highly acclaimed, leading to her nomination as the “Best New Young Opera Singer” by the international magazine Opernwelt.
In 2000, Kremena began a two-year master class at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, under Professor Daphne Evangelatos. During this period, she performed frequently across Germany, Italy, and Austria in roles such as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart), Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito (Mozart), Dorabella in Così fan tutte (Mozart), and Orfeo in Orpheus and Euridice (Gluck), among others. In 2002, she was invited by the Teatro Comunale di Firenze to sing 2nd Lady in The Magic Flute, and she starred as Dorina in Galuppi’s La Diavolessa at the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam, Germany, which was recorded on CD. She joined the Junges Ensemble der Bayerische Staatsoper in 2002-2003, performing roles such as Hansel in Hansel und Gretel (Humperdinck).
Kremena first met conductor James Levine in early 2003, when she participated in the opera Moses und Aaron by Schonberg, under Levine’s direction. In November 2003, Kremena achieved great success performing Judith in Duke Bluebeard’s Castle by Bartók with the Münchner Philharmoniker, directed by Levine. This production was recorded live on CD by Oehms Classic, Germany. She has since performed 12 concerts with James Levine, including Parsifal (Wagner) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Mendelssohn), the latter of which was performed before an audience of 8,000 at the Annual Open-air concert at Odeonsplatz in Munich, Germany.
From 2004 to 2006, Kremena performed numerous successful concerts across Europe. In May 2006, she starred as Erika in Samuel Barber‘s Vanessa at Teatro Massimo in Palermo. In October and November 2006, she performed as Dorabella in Così fan tutte at Schloss Theater am Neuen Palais in Potsdam, Germany.
In 2007-2008, Kremena participated in various productions and concerts in Germany and Italy, performing roles such as Rosina (Rossini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Dorabella (Mozart, Così fan tutte), and Octavian (R. Strauss, Der Rosenkavalier). She also performed at the Mozart Gala in Koblenz, followed by a concert of Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri in Ingolstadt.
In 2010, Kremena performed in Gluck’s Le Cinesi, a co-production between the Potsdamer Festspiele and China National Peking Opera Company, with performances in Potsdam, Germany, and Winterthur, Switzerland, and plans for staging at the Peking National Opera. In September 2011, she performed at the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo, Italy, as Ida in Donizetti’s Gemma di Vergy.
In recent years, Kremena has continued performing widely, including at prestigious European venues and important Asian engagements, such as her participation in the Peking – Mei Lanfang Grand Theater in Peking, China, in October 2012.
Kremena speaks five languages: English, German, Italian, Russian, and Bulgarian.
